On February 3, 2016, The Players’ Tribune and the University of Michigan football program partnered for “Signing of the Stars,” a special invite-only fundraising event to celebrate Michigan’s newest recruiting class. The event, which took place on campus at Hill Auditorium, was live-streamed online through The Players’ Tribune website.
“Signing of the Stars” featured a celebrity cast, which attracted attention from national media outlets. The event was highlighted by Tom Brady and Derek Jeter, alongside Ric Flair, Migos, John Harbaugh and Mike Shanahan. Jeter is also the founder of The Players’ Tribune, a platform for athletes to tell stories to the public. The Players’ Tribune President Jaymee Messler was a Keynote Speaker at MSBC 2015.
The event featured live performances and each committed member of the 2016 recruiting class. The capstone of National Signing Day was the commitment of Rashan Gary, a defensive tackle from Paramus Catholic in New Jersey and the No. 1 consensus recruit in the 2016 class.
“Signing of the Stars” also served as a fundraiser for the ChadTough Foundation, which supports pediatric brain tumor research and studies nationwide. The foundation was established to commemorate Chad Carr, the grandson of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr, who lost his battle with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) at age five in 2015. It was reported by multiple news outlets that as of Wednesday night, the event had raised over $110,000.
The event was a part of the “Our Michigan” feature through The Players’ Tribune, which highlights various aspects of Michigan Athletics.
