5 Questions with MSBC Social Media Coordinator Holly West

Holly-WestEach week the MSBC will conduct a Q&A with two current planning committee members to provide some background on the people working hard to make the 2014 conference a success. This week Sophomore Holly West shares her experience of being on the 2014 MSBC team.

MSBC: Explain your role in the MSBC team and what you are currently doing in preparation for the MSBC 2014 conference.

West: I am the social media coordinator and I work within the brand marketing division.  My main role is to manage the social media accounts for the MSBC, which include Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.  In preparation for this year’s conference, I have been working with the other members of the marketing team to plan and develop a social media strategy outlining marketing campaigns and angles for events.

MSBC: How has your position in the planning committee helped you grow professionally?

West: I have grown professionally in several ways in the short time I have been with the MSBC.  It has been a great opportunity to develop my communication skills through interactions within the marketing team as well as with other divisions.  Additionally, I have gained organization skills from developing the long-term social media strategy.

MSBC: What are you looking forward to in planning the MSBC 2014 conference?

West: I am most looking forward to working with and being surrounded with talented and dedicated peers and professionals.  A vital part of the sport industry is staying connected, not only attending the conference but also being part of the planning committee has allowed me to meet many unique people.  As the year unfolds, I am excited to learn about the experiences that my peers and members of the sport industry have had, in addition to learn from their advice and expertise.

MSBC: What was your favorite panel from the MSBC 2013 conference?

West: I really enjoyed the “Brand Expansion Through Sport” panel. I thought it was very interest to hear the unique angle from companies that leverage sport to define and advance their brands.

MSBC: What are your professional aspirations upon graduating from the University of Michigan?

West: After graduation, I am hoping to work for the marketing department for a professional team.  As I am still exploring new sectors of marketing, I am very open to what type of position whether it be partnerships, event planning or social media. Ideally, I would love to move back home to San Diego and work with either the San Diego Chargers or Padres to be involved in the sport organizations I grew up with.
