Each week the MSBC will conduct a Q&A with two current planning committee members to provide some background on the people working hard to make the 2014 conference a success. This week Sophomore Michael Wong shares his experience of being on the 2014 MSBC team.
MSBC: Explain your role in the MSBC team and what you are currently doing in preparation for the MSBC 2014 conference.
Wong: As the Registration/Communication/Outreach Coordinator, I’ve been lucky enough to have a variety of roles for MSBC. Right now I’m in the process of contacting over 250 schools that offer undergraduate sport management degrees to generate interest for the MSBC BIG Initiative as well as the 2014 conference. Working alongside the rest of the marketing team, I hope to be able to bring in an audience from all over the country that share a common passion for sport business
MSBC: What inspired you to join the MSBC planning committee?
Wong: After hearing all the positive reaction from the 2013 conference, I wanted to dig deeper and see what MSBC was all about. What I found was that this was a group of incredible individuals who not only had a desire to succeed in sport business, but also the commitment to put in the countless hours necessary to make their lofty goals a reality. I knew then that MSBC was bound to grow and that I wanted to help MSBC fortify itself as a powerful presence in the sport business industry.
MSBC: What has been the best part of your role thus far?
Wong: By having a role that is consistently in contact with other teams within MSBC, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many of the incredible people in MSBC. It’s rare that you can get such a large and diverse group of individuals who can find common ground and work toward similar goals. Seeing how everyone is so motivated to succeed truly creates an environment where great things are bound to come from and I’m looking forward to seeing how all these amazing things come together as we get closer to the 2014 conference.
MSBC: What is one panel you would like to see at the 2014 conference?
Wong: With a growing interest in the athletes and sporting leagues centralized within North America, I am curious to see how leading executives from the major sports are trying to increase their international presence while still satisfying the fans and athletes here. While some leagues have dabbed into the international market, it’s apparent that the international markets are still relatively untapped. It’s an exciting process to watch grow and I’d love to hear firsthand what type of immediate and long term strategies leagues have in place.
MSBC: What are your professional aspirations upon graduating from the University of Michigan?
Wong: While I am not 100% certain exactly what I will pursue, I am interested in finance and marketing, particularly investment management and brand expansion. Down the road, I’d love to be able to tie in my work back into the sport industry.
