Each week the MSBC will conduct a Q&A with two current planning committee members to provide some background on the people working hard to make the 2014 conference a success. This week Sophomore Drew Berube shares his experience of being on the 2014 MSBC team.
MSBC: Explain your role in the MSBC team and what you are currently doing in preparation for the MSBC 2014 conference.
Berube: As Operations Coordinator in the event planning division my responsibilities are to coordinate lunch for the speakers and all in attendance the day of the conference. I also help coordinate sponsor tables and the activations and areas outside of Blau Auditorium where the MSBC is held. The entire event planning team and I work closely to develop a minute-by-minute schedule of the conference, necessary signage, and insure the conference runs smoothly. Currently, I am helping the MSBC team with finding an organization that can help us live stream the conference to improve and broaden our reach. I am also working with the entire event planning team on hammering out all the details we can in the summer, so the fall is more manageable as the conference will be upon us.
MSBC: What is your favorite part of being on the 2014 MSBC planning committee thus far?
Berube: My favorite part of being on the event planning team is being involved with all the behind the scenes action that goes into MSBC. From the day-of schedule, to the food, to the inner workings of the conference, the planning team and I have been deeply immersed. It’s really cool to see everything that goes into events like these. I’m excited to see all of our planning come to fruition the day of the conference. It is going to be fun.
MSBC: What doe the theme ‘Game Changers: Innovating Today. Defining Tomorrow.’ mean to you?
Berube: The theme ‘Game Changers: Innovating Today. Defining Tomorrow’ means the people, moments, and innovations that changed the sports business industry forever. 20-30 years ago the sports business world was not that big and there was no such thing if rarely a program in sport management. The times are changing and the future is coming. We are the future of the sports industry, and we must learn from the great leaders of the day so we can step up to the plate and define tomorrow.
MSBC: Who is one speaker that you would like to see at the 2014?
Berube: I would love to see Phil Knight, the Co-Founder and Chairman of Nike, Inc. He is a guy I look up to because he is an innovator, a leader, and a great businessman. I believe he could teach us all so much. I have been pushing for him since the first MSBC in 2012. I hope in the near future to welcome him to the Michigan Sport Business Conference. I would be very happy and know we all would benefit from his knowledge.
MSBC: What are your professional aspirations upon graduating from the University of Michigan?
Berube: Upon graduating from the University of Michigan, I hope to enter into the sport business industry where ever I can for two years then get my masters degree in Business and/or Sports Administration from either the University of Oregon, Ohio University, of the University of Central Florida. After I obtain my degree, I would look to work in any field or department for a professional team or marketing agency, and know that each is a spring board and opportunity to broad my horizons as I reach for my ultimate goal of becoming the President or Chief Marketing Officer with the New York Jets or Giants.
