5 Questions with MSBC Creative and Graphics Coordinator Keyana Thompson-Shaw

Each week the MSBC will conduct a Q&A with two current planning committee members to provide some background on the people working hard to make the 2014 conference a success. This week Junior Keyana Thompson-Shaw shares her experience of being on the 2014 MSBC team.

MSBC: Explain your role on the MSBC team and what you are currently doing in preparation for the MSBC 2014 conference.

Thompson-Shaw: I am the Creative and Graphics Coordinator so I am responsible for the visual look and brand consistency of MSBC.  I have been trying to solidify the MSBC brand, separate from this year’s conference theme, by creating a brand book and constantly trying to find the best combination of elements to represent MSBC.  I have also been working on a lot of the social media graphics and am now preparing for the conference by designing the attendee booklet and other content related to the theme.

MSBC: How did you come up with the ideas for the graphics for the MSBC theme release countdown?

Thompson-Shaw: I thought it would be easier to illustrate most of the game changing moments rather than find a picture that expressed exactly what I wanted. I kept most of the images simple and tried to think of simple visuals that could deliver the message. Coming up with each idea was relatively easy, the longest part was actually illustrating them. My favorite one from the week was the MJ-Nike graphic.

MSBC: What has been the most rewarding part of being on the 2014 planning committee?

Thompson-Shaw: It has been great to work alongside a lot of my classmates on something external to our education. We are gaining real life skills doing something we are all pretty passionate about, which is connecting people, and I think that is pretty cool.

MSBC: What is one panel you would like to see at the 2014 conference and why?

Thompson-Shaw: I would personally like to see a panel of minority sport professionals and executives who speak on how they worked to attain their status and positions.  A panel like that would be very encouraging and also provide a different perspective of the sport industry.

MSBC: What are your professional aspirations upon graduating from the University of Michigan?

Thompson-Shaw: I feel like it changes by the month because there are so many things that I want to do and have a passion for. I have become very interested in entrepreneurship because I would like to build a brand from the ground up and have a big voice in what the brand actually represents. I would love to work for the Olympics one day or a design firm that works closely with athletic apparel accounts. There are a lot of routes that I could take and I am excited about that.
